How a septic system works

Everything that goes down your drains flows to a buried tank. Solids settle to the bottom as sludge, grease and light material float to the top as scum, and the partly treated liquid in the middle flows out to a drain field (also called a leach field or absorption area), where the soil finishes the job.

Pumping removes the sludge and scum before they build up enough to escape into the drain field. Once solids clog the field, repairs get much bigger. That's why routine pumping and inspection is the cheapest septic maintenance there is.

Many newer systems in Pahrump also include an advanced treatment unit that reduces nitrogen before effluent reaches the ground. These have aerators, pumps or media that need periodic service.

Signs your system needs attention

  • Drains slow throughout the house, or toilets gurgle
  • Sewage backing up into the lowest tub or shower
  • Rotten-egg or sewage smell outdoors near the tank or field
  • Soggy ground, standing water or unusually green patches over the drain field
  • An alarm sounding on a treatment unit or pump tank
  • You can't remember the last time the tank was pumped
Safety: Never enter or lean into a septic tank. The gases inside can kill quickly. Keep lids secured and keep kids and pets away from open tanks.

What affects the cost of septic work

We don't publish prices. These are the usual factors:

  • Tank size and how full it is: overdue tanks take longer.
  • Finding and opening the lid: buried lids have to be located and dug up. Risers make future service easier.
  • System type: advanced treatment units involve more components to service.
  • Distance: outlying properties may carry a trip charge.
  • Permits and engineering: new systems and replacements involve design, testing and county review.

Installing individual sewage disposal systems is licensed work in Nevada. NAC 624 defines classification C-27 as laying and installing individual systems for sewage disposal, including septic tanks and cesspools. Check any contractor's license at nvcontractorsboard.com.

Septic questions

Is this a septic company?

No. PahrumpSeptic.com is an independent advertising and referral service. Your call or request goes to a participating independent septic contractor serving the Pahrump Valley. That contractor quotes, schedules and performs the work.

How often should my septic tank be pumped?

The U.S. EPA says household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years, and that the average household system should be inspected at least every three years. Alternative systems with pumps, float switches or other mechanical parts should generally be inspected once a year. Your household size, tank size and water use change the timing.

Why are septic rules different in Pahrump?

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection notes that Pahrump is a Nitrogen Management Area requiring advanced treatment systems. Many newer Pahrump systems include a treatment unit with mechanical parts that need regular service. Check with Nye County Building & Safety about what applies to your property.
